The use of AI tools exploded in 2023, led by the meteoric rise of ChatGPT. A new study by WriterBuddy analyzed the top 50 AI tools and found ChatGPT accounted for a whopping 60% of all traffic. The United States and India led in adoption of AI tools, making up over half of all visitors.
ChatGPT saw insane growth after launching in November 2022. It went from 0 to over 146 billion visits by August 2023. No other AI tool came close to this level of interest. After peaking in May 2023, visits pulled back but still remain sky-high.
The US led AI tool use with 55 billion total visitors. India followed closely behind at 21 billion. Together they make up over half of worldwide traffic to AI tools. Europe as a whole comes in second after the US.
Chatbots like ChatGPT and Character AI dominated as the #1 AI category. AI writing tools like Google Bard followed behind in second place. Image generators like Midjourney and DALL-E were also popular but saw less growth than text AI.
The typical AI tool visit lasted about 13 minutes. However, tools like Character AI averaged 25 minutes, much higher than ChatGPT's 10 minutes. This shows some tools are better at retaining user attention.
Nearly 70% of AI tool users are male, compared to only 30.5% female users. The reasons for this gender gap are unclear, but likely tied to tech access and gender roles.
ChatGPT's meteoric rise shows that generative AI has gone fully mainstream. As more advanced AI tools launch we'll likely see an even bigger boom in 2024. Brands need an AI strategy now to ride this wave. The US and India lead in AI adoption, but expect developing countries to jump in as tools go global. AI chatbots have staying power but image AI could be the next wave to watch.
