Google has announced Gemini, its new AI model that will replace Pathways Language Model (PaLM) across its products. Gemini comes in three sizes - Nano, Pro and Ultra - and already powers Google's new conversational AI chatbot, Bard.
While not revealing the full scale of Gemini, Google claims it exceeds state-of-the-art models like OpenAI's GPT-3. Gemini is designed to be multi-modal, understand text, images and audio, and address common AI issues like hallucination and bias.
Gemini Nano will enable localized AI applications on devices like Pixel phones. The Pro version runs Bard in English for now. Over time, Gemini will also power Search, Ads and Chrome. Next year, Google will launch Bard Advanced using the full Ultra model.
The launch comes as more companies look to deploy mature generative AI like ChatGPT. OpenAI's GPT-4 is seen as the current industry standard, though Google claims Gemini outperforms it. This positions Google to better compete with OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft in enterprise AI.
Google is betting big on Gemini to catapult it to the top of the AI race. This powerful new model could give Google an edge over rivals in search, ads and other products. But OpenAI's GPT-4 remains the leader for now. The AI wars are heating up in 2023!
