3 Useful Updates to Google's AI Overviews - Here's What's New

Google's AI Overviews feature just got some handy updates that may turn you into a fan. On Thursday, Google announced several changes to improve AI Overviews' helpfulness. The best part? You can try them now in Search Labs.

Save AI Overviews to Revisit Later

The first update adds a "save" button under each AI Overview. Click it, and that overview will reappear next time you search the same query. You can also find saved overviews under your Interests page.

This could come in handy for open-ended searches like "fun science projects for a 12-year-old."

Simplify the Language with One Tap

Another update lets you tap "Simpler" to simplify the language of an overview. It rephrases answers in more straightforward, conversational terms.

Great when you want the key points explained in plain English. Both features are available in English through the "AI Overviews and more" Search Labs experiment.

New Sidebar Links You to Relevant Websites

On desktop, Google's testing a sidebar on the right with links to websites related to your search. Mobile users can tap the icons at the top for the same quick access.

The goal is to conveniently connect you with more helpful resources. These updates are rolling out globally now.

AI Overviews Launches in 6 New Countries

Google also just expanded AI Overviews to the UK, India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil. It's available in country-specific languages.

Google's Bumpy Road with AI Overviews

Google's first take on AI-generated search results, the Generative Search Experience, arrived in beta in May 2023. But early issues with inaccurate overviews led Google to scale back the feature's availability.

In May 2024, AI Overviews launched again to all users. But once more, problematic results forced Google to rein it in - this time to around 15% of searches.

Hopefully these latest upgrades bring more value. But you can always try other AI search engines if you'd prefer. [Insert link to your AI search engine comparison post] has a great breakdown of the top options.

Give Google's revamped AI Overviews a spin and see if the new tweaks win you over. Just enroll in Search Labs to get started.
