Big Tech Pursuing Reckless AI Profits Says UN Head

Big technology companies like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft are aggressively developing artificial intelligence without proper governance or risk assessment, according to the UN Secretary General. This headlong rush for AI profits could have serious unintended consequences that worsen inequality and job losses.

The UN chief called out tech companies in a speech at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland. He said some firms show a "reckless disregard for human rights, personal privacy, and social impact" in their pursuit of AI profits.

The UN Secretary General urged governments to work closely with Big Tech to establish "guardrails" and oversight for AI development. This will help mitigate risks and direct AI toward benefits for society. However, tech companies often resist regulation and argue AI will create more jobs than it destroys.

AI May Worsen Inequality, Disrupt Jobs

The potential downsides of unchecked AI development are severe, the UN Secretary General warned. He cited a recent IMF report predicting AI could displace 40% of jobs within 15 years. This massive economic disruption could "worsen inequality" as lower-skilled workers lose out.

The UN chief said without proper governance, AI may primarily benefit developed countries and big corporations. Developing nations could be left even further behind.

Call for AI Guardrails and Governance

The UN Secretary General pushed for immediate action to regulate AI systems and their use. This includes risk assessment frameworks and monitoring for harmful impacts. It also means ensuring equitable access to AI so developing countries also benefit.

He advised setting up a coordinating body with governments and tech companies to oversee AI. This could create guidelines and best practices for ethical AI development. It could also audit algorithms and AI systems for biases or other problems.

Oversight and collaboration is urgently needed on AI, the UN head said, before it's too late. AI promises many benefits, but it also poses risks that could damage economies and societies if left unchecked. Proactive governance can direct AI to empower people and businesses broadly.
